Loving the Journey with…

Pastor Dustin Aagaard

Summer Jam

Journey, you would be so proud of Tammy, the staff, and all the volunteers that made Summer Jam happen. They loved, shined, sang, led, laughed, and served so many kids and families this week. What an incredible time it has been.

One of the things we say internally is that we are not in the event planning business. We don’t just do events to do events. We strategically do events like Summer Jam to create “easy invites” to reach the community and help them experience the love of God that changes lives. Leading up to Summer Jam, we asked and encouraged you to invite your friends, neighbors, and coworkers, and you all did just that. One of the more encouraging stats we saw during registration was that over 100 kids that came to Summer Jam have never been to Journey before. So, thank you, Journey, for being bold and inviting those around you.

Jesus said,

“Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me.”

Mark 9:37

Journey, thank you for being a church that believes in and welcomes the next generation. As Mark reminds us when we do, we are not just welcoming kids; we are welcoming Jesus.

Last weekend, during our Jesus is the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) series, we talked about how Jesus is the G.O.A.T. of love. In the message, I mentioned, “Love makes us do crazy things.” Francesca Angevine (a Journey Kids volunteer) heard that and came up with a loving yet crazy idea. Fueled by compassion to help kids know Jesus, she committed to taking care of eight total kids, all ten years old or younger, for the week so they could experience Summer Jam.

After day two, she said, “It’s only been two days, and I’m exhausted, just completely drained, but full at the same time. It’s filling to see these kids pray before they eat just because they want to, it’s filling to see them dance and sing to worship songs they heard at church, it’s filling to see them grow together, to see them believe in something greater than themselves. No, it’s not been rainbows and marshmallows taking on this task, but no one said it’s easy; they said it would be worth it.”

It’s through Christ-filled volunteers like Francesca who are willing to do whatever it takes to point people to Jesus. Summer Jam was full of Francescas. Journey is full of Francescas, and it’s so exciting to be a part of what God is doing around here.

Our Next Gen Production Resident, Leah Esakson, made this great Summer Jam recap video for you to see what it was all about. Just click on the picture below.

As these new families begin to show up on Sundays, may we overwhelm them with the love and hospitality we are called to live out. May we again remind the community that Journey is a place where everybody’s welcome, nobody’s perfect, and through Jesus, anything’s possible.

I’m loving the Summer Jam Journey,

As we continue to let Love be the Movement, I invite you to join us this Sunday online or in person at 9:30 or 11:15 a.m. as we continue to look at how Jesus is truly the greatest of all time (G.O.A.T.).
