Soul Care

Rest for Your Soul

October 11, 2020

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)

Cycle of Grace: Acceptance

You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. (Matthew 3:17)

Cycle of Grace: Sustenance
The test of a sustaining spiritual practice is: Does it fill you with grace for life?

Cycle of Grace: Significance

“I AM …” statements:

I am the bread of life… (John 6:35)
I am the Way… (John 14:6)
I am the Vine… (John 15:5)
I am the Good Shepherd… (John 10:11)

“YOU ARE…” statements:

You are the light of the world… (Matthew 5:14) You are the salt of the earth… (Matthew 5:13) You are a city on a hill… (Matthew 5:14)

If you are the Son of God, turn these stones into bread… IF you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from the temple. (Matthew 4:3,6)

Being busy is an outward condition, a condition of the body. Being hurried is an inner condition, a condition of the soul.

A full schedule
Many activities
An outward condition of the body
Physically demanding
Reminds me I need God

Preoccupied mind
Unable to be fully present
An inner condition of the soul Spiritually draining
Causes me to be unavailable to God

Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest. (Mark 6:31)

He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters. He refreshes my soul. (Psalm 23:2-3)

Solitude is the practice of being absent from people and things to attend to God.

Silence is the practice of quieting every inner and outer voice to listen to God.

J.P. Phillips translates the familiar words of Romans 12:2 to say: “Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould.”

Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. (Psalm 100:3)

He makes me lie down.” (Psalm 23:2)

“I have discovered that all the unhappiness of men arises from one single fact: that they are unable to stay quietly in their own room.”—Blaise Pascal

God has finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. (Genesis 2:2)

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy…On it you shall not do any work. (Exodus 20:8,10)

Cycle of Grace: Achievement

Day one: Let there be light
Day two: Heavens and earth
Day three: Sky, land, vegetation
Day four: Sun, moon, stars
Day five: Living creatures in the water and sky

Day six: Livestock, creatures on the land and man

Day seven: Rest

We work from our rest; not rest from our work.
