The G.O.A.T.

Jesus was the greatest follower of all time.

Who you follow tells me where you are going.

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might. (Ecclesiastes 9:10)

The Son (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him, all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church(Colossians 1:15-18)

At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord. (Philippians 2:10-11)

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. I’ve failed over and over again in my life. And that’s why I succeed.”—Michael Jordan

Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.      (John 5:19)

Jesus got his leadership from his followership.

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee (James and John) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26:36-39)

Then he (Jesus) returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.”      (Matthew 26:45)

“Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!” (Matthew 26:46)

#1 Jesus exemplified radical obedience to the Father.

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24)

“So thankful for the active obedience of Christ. No hope without it.”—J.G. Machen

#2 Who you follow tells me where you’re going.

Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1)

“Following Jesus will make your life better and will make you better at life.”—Andy Stanley

#3 The Father’s will is > my wants

Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. (Galatians 1:10)

God > People

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interest of the others. (Philippians 2:3-4)

People > Me

He must become greater; I must become less. (John 3:30)

God > Me

I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.  (Galatians 2:20)
