Blue Christmas

December 12, 2021

In an article titled, “The Christmas Blues—Why They Happen and How to Manage” the writer lists three reasons why people feel so blue at Christmas:

1) Too much comparison shopping.
2) Stress is higher.
3) End of year anxiety leads to negative thinking.

And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:7 KJV)

This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too. (Luke 2:34-35)

Jesus Christ came to be rejected so that we could be accepted.

So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:6-7 NKJV)

He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. (Luke 2:25-26)

Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.” (Luke 2:27-32)

Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation… (Luke 2:29-30)

This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too. (Luke 2:34-35)

Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace, but a sword. (Matthew 10:34)

Jesus causes conflict among people.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19)

Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. (Luke 4:21)

But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way. (Luke 4:30)
“…the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” (Luke 2:35)

“Who are my mother and my brothers?…Here are my mother and brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” (Mark 3:34-35)

Jesus causes conflict within people.

He was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished. (Isaiah 53:8)

Because He was spoken against, you can be spoken for. Because He was rejected you can be accepted. Because there was no room for Him, you can dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
