A Fresh Start Ahead
Hello Journey Friends and Family,
If we have not had the chance to meet, my name is Kevin Monahan, and I get the honor of being your new Executive Pastor of Ministries.
I have always been someone who is drawn to start something new. The idea of being able to start fresh fuels me. Do not get me wrong, I love finishing a task or solving a problem. That is what great leaders live for.
There are so many things that I look forward to at Journey Christian. My family and I are truly grateful to be part of this church family. Even more so, I am thankful that God’s mercies are new each day. When we realize that He wants to do a new work in our lives, it makes it even more exciting. Look at what the prophet Isaiah said:
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:18-19
Starting points like a new year or new employment can provide positive motivation, but, in Christ, we can get a fresh start anytime we want. That’s what is so great about grace! He wants us to start fresh with him each day. It doesn’t matter where we are or what we’ve done; a new beginning can happen for every one of us.
Here are a few reminders that can help prepare us now for everything that God has for us next.
Spend time with Jesus. The first step to a fresh start is to spend consistent and quality time with God. Many of us are eager to develop our relationship with God but we are busy – very busy – and if we aren’t busy, we feel guilty that we are wasting time not being productive. We struggle to stop long enough to be with Jesus and to cultivate our own direct experience with God. Take a few minutes to sit in silence and solitude. Speak out your thankfulness. Ask for forgiveness of your sins. Pray for others. Starting each day with a clean slate means “forgetting the former things.” When we ask for forgiveness, God forgives us and forgets our past. Take a moment and get right with God. Confess your sins and ask Jesus to forgive them. This will allow you to move forward.
Walk in the Spirit. The second step is to receive the Holy Spirit. We are filled with the Holy Spirit at salvation, but a fresh filling is needed to solidify this fresh start. Ask Jesus to fill you with the power of the Holy Spirit. D.L. Moody was asked why he needed to be refilled with the Holy Spirit. He replied: “Because I leak.” Many of us are running on the fumes of the Holy Spirit filling and not overflowing in his power.
Keep Moving Forward.Soren Kierkegaard, (yes, I was a philosophy major in college) once observed that life is lived forward but only understood backward. There is wisdom in these words. Learn from the past but focus on the future.
A fresh start ahead is waiting for those who want it today.
There are no words sufficient to express my deep gratitude for the honor and privilege to be part of the Journey Christian staff. I know that may sound a bit hokey, but it is sincere. I get to do what I love and that makes me feel so blessed!
I hope to see you this Sunday at 9:30am or 11:15am as we continue in our June messages series “Things to Know Before You Go.”
Here to serve,
